5 Best Office Chairs for Tall People in 2023

We all deserve to be comfortable… especially at work. A physically supportive office setup keeps us happy throughout the workday and helps us accomplish more, boosting our productivity. When it comes to desk chairs, it pays to be comfortable.

Finding a chair as a tall person can be especially challenging… unless you know where to look. Well, look no further. Here are my pics of the best office chairs for tall people in 2023.

What makes me an expert? I’m 6′ 1″ and learned firsthand how a desk chair for taller-than-average people benefits work performance. I also gained professional experience selecting chairs during my time in furniture sales and interior design. I’ve helped taller folks find the perfect chair for their body styles.

If you are tall, pull up a chair and check out this list of the best office chairs this year.

What Defines an Office Chair for Tall People?

According to the CDC, the average height of a man in the US is 5’9”, and a woman is 5’4”. That data aside, even tall people come in varying sizes, which can require different chair options for taller people.

Here is a quick guide to help you find your ideal chair. Keep in mind that body shapes are different (some people have taller legs than others, etc.), so use these numbers as basic averages to get the support you need.

Seat Height of the Chair

In general, you should be able to sit with your ankles straight to the ground and your feet flat on the floor. This typically results in the following maximum seat heights:

  • 18” seat height for 5’8” users
  • 19” seat height for 6’1” users
  • 20” seat height for 6’3” users
  • 21” seat height for 6’6” users
  • 22” seat height for 6’8” users
  • 23” seat height for 7’1” users
  • 24” seat height for 7’3” users

Weight Capacity of the Chair

With taller-than-average heights come heavier-than-average weights. Most chairs can hold up to 250 lbs, which works for many tall people, but there are also chairs for heavier body weights ranging from 300 to 500 lbs. I have included several heavy-weight options in this list.

Best Office Chairs for Tall People in 2023

Let’s dive into the best chairs that accommodate tall users. I include options that work for a range of tall people.

1. Herman Aeron Chair Size C

Best Quality Office Chair

About the Chair

For nearly 30 years the Aeron Chair has been a top-rated ergonomic chair thanks to its blend of ergonomics, comfort, and durability. Its reputation for quality is so good it is often used as an executive office chair. It also comes in multiple sizing options. The size C option works for people 5’10” to 6’6”. It can hold up to 350 lbs. It is also wider than the other sizes, making it workable for larger users.

The ergonomic mesh design keeps you cool, reduces sweat, and is easy to clean. You also get ample adjustment options, including back support options, such as three types of lumbar support,, tilt tension, and telt limiting (including a forward tilt option), fully adjustable armrests, and height adjustment. Not too shabby.

The Amazon link is the bare-bones version of the chair. For more detailed purchasing options, see the Herman Miller website. You can choose from six color/material options. The chair has recently been updated to a more eco-friendly design.

What I think

I own an Aeron Chair and am very impressed with its durability and comfort. I stay comfy even after long periods of sitting. Before I bought it, I avoided the chair for many years due to feeling the rigid outer frame underneath my legs, but they fixed the problem on recent models. The adjustable features also make it ultra-comfortable. I also have no low back pain, even during long days at work.

My chair is black, but my wife has the mineral-colored option, a beautiful light taupe gray that works well in her silver and white office.

All the benefits do come at a price – literally. The chair starts at $1,275 and goes up to $2,340, though you can buy the size C in a basic version for just under $900 on Amazon. But the chair lasts and comes with a 12-year warranty. Note that the ergonomic mesh material can also be firm for some users.

Cons

  • High price
  • Older models feel a bit less comfortable, so buy new if possible
  • The ergonomic mesh material may feel firm for some users

2. Oak Hollow Furniture Aloria Series: Size Tall

Best Chair for Extra-Tall Users

OAK HOLLOW ALORIA SERIES LEATHER OFFICE CHAIR

Image and Chair Details: Oak Hollow Furniture

About the Chair

This chair works for users as tall as 7’1″. It is also loaded with features and extremely comfortable. You also get the luxurious touch of a genuine leather seat. It comes in three colors: red, gray, or black. You can adjust the armrests, seat height and depth, tilt, and lumbar support. The chair also comes with a lifetime and 5-year warranty on the leather and foam.

What I think

The seat is more airy than the Aeron Chair and includes foam that will break down over time, but it is still an excellent chair for long days at work. The quality of the construction is excellent, and the optional headrest is a helpful addition. I wish the frame came in other colors, but the different seat color options are a nice touch. And that lifetime warranty is a beautiful thing.

3. WELLNEWLIFE Prestige Ergonomic Office Chair

Best Low-Priced Chair for Tall People

WELLNEWLIFE Prestige Ergonomic Office Chair

About the Chair

This high back chair has a double-back design for added comfort and is made to suit a wide array of body types. It also goes further with numerous adjustable elements. Examples include:

  • Armrests that rotate and slide up and down and frontwards and backward
  • Headrest that adjusts vertically and angles at the head and base.
  • A high backrest that moves up and down for ideal torso support
  • Adjustable seat height
  • Fully reclining design at 90, 110, and 135 degrees.
  • Other perks include an extremely durable mesh seat that doesn’t sag or tear over time.

What I think

This chair provides many of the same supports as the classic Aeron Chair with added options like head support and a vertically adjustable backrest, something the Aeron Chair doesn’t offer. The  breathable mesh design also looks good in an office and keeps you cool while you work. All of these benefits come at a reasonable price of under $350.

The only drawback is the color. You only have one option: black.

Height: suitable for users 5’4” to 6’6”

Weight: suitable for users up to 300 lbs

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Highly customizable
  • Durable mesh design
  • Attractive chair
  • Headrest support

Cons

4. GABRYLLY Office Chair, Large

A Low-Priced Option with Two Color Choices

GABRYLLY Office Chair, Large

About the Chair

Like the WELLNEWLIFE chair above, this high back chair features a full mesh design, a double back, and a headrest. The seat, however, is more curved at the front, allowing for more comfort under your legs and less strain on your butt. The seat also has a wide seat and back and a tall back design that accommodates people up to 6’4″ comfortably.

Note that the starting height on this one is taller than others on this list at 5’8” – just in case you share the chair with others.

You get a three-position tilt mechanism and a full mesh design to keep you cool. The armrests also adjust up and down, in and out, and front and back. The headrest also moves vertically and at an angle.

Unlike the WELLNEWLIFE chair, this chair comes in two color options: black and grey.

Why I Think

This is an excellent alternative to the WELLNEWLIFE for less resistance against your legs. However, the wheels could be more effective. If you plan on rolling the chair a lot, such as when making room for a walking pad, you will want a different chair. Also, the chair can be tricky to adjust the back while seated. It’s not a chair you’ll want to adjust freely every day.

Details

  • Height: suitable for users 5’8” to 6’4”
  • Weight: suitable for users up to 300 lbs

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Full mesh design that puts less strain on your seat and butt
  • An attractive chair design
  • Headrest
  • Two color options: black and grey
  • A highly rated chair for comfort and durability
  • Well-priced (under $270)

Cons

  • Wheels aren’t designed well for easy movement
  • Adjustments are awkward to use, so it’s best to set it and forget it.

5. HESL Big and Tall Office Chair: 500 LBS Capacity

Best Chair for Tall and Big Users

HESL Big and Tall Office Chair 500 lbs

About the Chair

If you are on the bigger side, this chair is for you. It holds up to 500 lbs, and the wide seat works for individuals as tall as 6’8″. It’s tough to find chairs in the mesh that hold this weight, and even then, those that do aren’t designed for ultra-tall people, so this chair features a padded seat, back, and armrests and uses PU leather. Still, it is designed to keep you cool while you work.

You still enjoy lumbar support and easy movement around the floor. The wheels are also specially made to reduce scratches.

The style could be sleeker, but this chair is supposed to deliver day in and day out, and the price for the quality is excellent.

What I Think

I like that this chair solves both the weight and height issues to put you on a solid foundation at work. And even though the chair does not use mesh, the plush material gives off an executive office vibe while feeling softer than mesh. The chair is also thought-through by providing airflow along the back and scratch-resistant wheels. This chair is meant to be used.

Details

  • Height: suitable for users 6’8” or lower
  • Weight: suitable for users up to 500 lbs

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • The size and weight capacity make this the best choice for big and tall individuals
  • A patterned back designed to encourage airflow on your back
  • Easy movement
  • Soft cushioned design

Cons

  • A non-mesh design
  • The looks could be better
  • PU leather isn’t ideal
